The Naturalization Process

Illinois Naturalization Lawyer
Chicago Immigration, Permanent Residence Attorney

At the Badia-Tavas Law Group, Ltd., we recognize that the process of immigration and naturalization can be an intimidating one. Even minor mistakes or omissions on a citizenship application can cause it to be delayed or denied.

That's why Chicago residents rely on our law firm for effective assistance in the citizenship and naturalization process.

If you are a permanent legal resident who is considering becoming a U.S. citizen, please contact an Illinois naturalization lawyer at Badia-Tavas Law Group, Ltd. today.

Eligibility
The first step in the naturalization process is to determine if you are eligible to become a U.S. citizen. To be qualified, you must be at least 18 years old, a legal permanent resident of the U.S. who has lived in America for at least five years. You must also be of good moral character.

Application
The next step is completing the application for citizenship which is sent to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS), along with supporting documents, two photos, an application fee ($320), and a fee for fingerprinting ($70).

Fingerprints
Since August, 2004, applicants for citizenship have been required to be fingerprinted. After you send in your application, you will receive an appointment to have your fingerprints taken. You may be asked at that time to provide additional documents.

Interview and Test
Remember to bring proper identification to this important meeting. You will answer questions about your background and take the English and civics tests. If you pass the test, you will receive a decision about whether your application for citizenship has been accepted.

Oath of Allegiance
Successful naturalization applicants will receive a date for a ceremony at which they will take the Oath of Allegiance. At the ceremony, you will return your legal permanent resident card (green card). After taking the oath, you will be a naturalized citizen of the United States.
