What to Expect in a Naturalization Test

US Citizenship Exam Lawyers

The thought of taking the US citizenship exam keeps many people from becoming a United States citizen — even if they have been legal permanent residents (green card holders) for many years.

Some people feel their English isn't good enough and others are concerned about the history and government test.

At the Badia-Tavas Law Group, Ltd., we make certain our clients are well prepared for the naturalization test. Once you know what to expect and what to study, we believe you'll do very well on the citizenship test.

Language Test
At your naturalization interview, you will be tested on your ability read write and speak English. You do not need to be absolutely fluent in English, but must have a basic understanding and knowledge of the language.

  • You will be asked questions from the application for naturalization (Form N-400 ).
  • You will be asked 10 questions on US civics and history.
  • You'll be asked to write a sentence or two.
  • Your speaking ability will be assessed as you answer questions during your interview.

Civics Test
The civics test includes basic question about U.S. history and government. To prepare, you can review sample questions and take an on-line naturalization self test to prepare. Sample questions include:  "Who was the first president of the United States?" "For how long do we elect the president?" and "What are the 49th and 50th states of the union?"
