To become a U.S. citizen through naturalization you must meet the following requirements:

    - Physically reside in the U.S. for the past 2 1/2 years
    - Be a legal permanent U.S. resident for at least five years
    - Have paid U.S. taxes
    - Know how to read, write, and speak English
    - Know and understand U.S. history and government
    - Possess good moral character
    - Be attached to the principles of the U.S. Constitution
    - Be favorably disposed toward the United States.

For example, it is important to let us know if you have had any criminal charges against you in the United States or your home country, especially if you travel outside of the U.S. frequently.
